Eric Carle

Eric Carle is an American designer who is primarily known for is illustrations and writing of children's books. I figured seeing how our final project was book covers it would be fitting to have my last designer be related somehow
His most famous book is The Very Hungry Caterpillar, it is a picture
book that has very few words but has managed to get translated into over 62 languages and has sold more than 52 million copies. He has since published more than 70 books.
He was educated in Germany and his father was drafted into the German army During WWII, as well as he also being conscripted to help did trenches at the age of 15. His wife believe that this
experience has had a lasting effect on him in the form of post traumatic stress.
His career was actually started because Bill Martin, Jr. Noticed a lobster that he has created for an ad, and wanted to collaborate on a picture book, call Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? which became a best-seller.
He has an art style that is recognizable from his collage technique. He uses hand-printed papers, and his books have an added dimension of die-cut pages, twinkling light, or even sounds. He tends to draw his inspiration from his love of nature, which may help him also in his writing of these books seeing as children tend to share the same thoughts and frame of mind.

Storm Thorgerson was a graphic designer that was best known for his designing of album covers for many top music artists. Many of the artists he has designed for, I have listened too. Many of us have been exposed to this talented designer’s images. Storm was actually a young teenage friend of guitarist David Gilmour from Pink Floyd; he also served as Gilmour’s best man in his wedding in 1994. Storm Thorgerson designs are well known for their surreal elements they hold.

William Caslon

This week I'm taking back, way back, back into time (Sorry couldn't resist). This is William Caslon, he actually started out as an English gunsmith, and it was because of his typefaces and the fact that they were so legible that it help secure his spot as one of the leading printers during that time in England. Graphic Designers where a thing even before they were a thing it seems.

Born in Cradley, Worcestershire, he learned to be an engraver in Birmingham, started his own business in London in 1716 engraving gun locks and barrels, and a bookbinder's tool cutter (hmm books and typefaces, might there be a correlation between this choice an our current project?)

His biggest claim to fame just might be the fact that his typeface was used in the first printed version of the United States Declaration of Independence. Ironic seeing as he is British. While his typefaces fell out of favor about a year after his death they were later revived in the late 1840's and they are also widely used today.

Jessica Walsh, partner in Sagmeister & Walsh, made a splash with '40 Days of Dating.'

JESSICA WALSH

Jessica Walsh at the young age of 29 has made much success. She is currently a partner at Sagmeister & Walsh and teaching at the School of Visual Art's. Jessica went to the the Rhode Island School of Design and after graduating was asked to join Apple. Jessica turned down the six figure offer to intern with Paula Scher, a principal at the design firm Pentagram. Jessica became a success and worked with Levi's, music artist, retail, and more. At the small age of 11 she began to teach her self  coding and web design, also Jessica in her early years created an HTML & CSS tutorial site that offered free templates for blogging. Her work has been awarded along with her self. Jessica is another young and inspiring graphic designer with much more to give.

Eric Carle was an American designer that wrote children's books as well as an illustrator in his own right. His books were sold all over the world totaling up to 62 millions copies, Witnessing challenging times, Eric escaped bombings and saw people killed a  few feet away from him, which his wife believed he suffered post-traumatic stress.

During his writing and Illustrating years Eric's work became recognizable, most of his work seemed to have been in collage form with bright and colorful images.According to wikipedia.org his work was not only entertaining, it was also an opportunity to teach the world something.

In his own words.... " With many of my books I attempt to bridge the gap between the home and school. To me home represents, or should represent; warmth , security, toys, holding hands, being held. School is a strange and new place for a child. Will it be a happy place? There are new people, a teacher, classmates-will they be friendly?

Johnathan Barnabrook is a British typographer, filmmaker, and graphic designer.  He studied at the Royal College of Art and Central Saint Martins.  Johnathan Barnbrook's graphic design is often expressive of his personal responses to political events and what he deems the unfairness that exists in this world. He has said his ambition is to use "design as a weapon for social change".  Notably, Johnathan Barnbrook designed  David Bowie’s, 2002 album Heathen’s cover art work and went on to design the sleeves for all of Bowie's studio albums.  Font design is another of Johnathan Barbrook’s occupations and he’s released a series of provocatively named fonts which includes Bastard, False Idol, Infidel, Sarcastic, and Shock and awe.

Pilar Zeta was born June 15, 1986 in Bueno Aires, Argentina.  She’s actually done album cover art work for Head full of Dreams, the 2015 release from one of my favorite bands, ColdPlay.  She pretty much found her calling very early in life, drawing and painting since she was six years old.  Her early exposure to art museums by her father,  Indigo children philosophies from her mother, and  introduction to 1960’s bands like Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin by her brother, she found herself very interested in cosmology, metaphysics, and later meditation, the techniques and colors used in the artwork in the museums, and the psychedelic  album covers of the bands.  She was fascinated by art but completely blown away at the ability to create works of art using computers.  She knew she would be a graphic designer and at the age of 19 she did just that when she landed her first graphic design job.

I took a look at some of her work and found it to be very out there!  She uses a lot of color, geometric shapes and out of this world themes.  I think she is very interesting because she is not afraid to step way outside of the box which I feel not only enhances her work but distinguishes her work from all others.  You definitely get a feel for all of her earlier influences in her work, especially the metaphysics, cosmology and psychedelic trip you feel like you’re on when you look at it.

Henry Charles Beck

http://britton.disted.camosun.bc.ca/beck_map.jpg

Henry Charles Beck known as Harry Beck, was an English technical draughtsman best known for creating the present London Underground Tube map in 1931.  Beck drew up the diagram in his spare time while working as an engineering draftsman at the London Underground Signals Office. London Underground was initially skeptical of Beck's radical proposal, an uncommission spare-time project, but tentatively introduced it to the public in a small pamphlet in 1933. It was immediately popular, and the Underground has used topological maps to illustrate the network ever since.
